The Monastery of the Saint Nicolas of Cats
Nearby Limassol, on the Akrotiri peninsula which not only has a status of an oversea territory of Great Britain but also is controlled by the British Army, there is the monastery, that takes care of cats. Cyprus is a cat island. It is scarcely probable not to notice the cats freely wandering through city and village areas. Only during a heat wave they sit in shades and hide from people. All Cypriots look carefully after animals which in the past helped them to halt the rapid pace of snakes’ reproduction. The cats, that were imported in the fourth century, have their dwelling in the Monastery of Saint Nicolas on the Akrotiri peninsula. There they are cared for by the nuns.
